It sounds like an L-pad is what you need, although you'll be dissipating
a lot of excess power and driving the amplifier harder than necessary -
possibly into distortion. An ideal solution would be to figure out
which resistors you could replace _inside_ the receiver, or perhaps the
volume pot itself, to attenuate the outbound signal _before_ the
amplifier stage. In an older device you might even find a couple
separate little pots you can turn, who knows...

Or you could install fixed RCA attenuators on every input to the
receiver. It might not work well for phono but it would be fine for
everything else.
