It sounds like an L-pad is what you need, although you'll be dissipating a lot of excess power and driving the amplifier harder than necessary - possibly into distortion. An ideal solution would be to figure out which resistors you could replace _inside_ the receiver, or perhaps the volume pot itself, to attenuate the outbound signal _before_ the amplifier stage. In an older device you might even find a couple separate little pots you can turn, who knows...
Or you could install fixed RCA attenuators on every input to the receiver.
