Audio always on / off is for a variety of uses. Historically, some people wanted it off when the attached Squeeze XYZ was off, as their DAC amplifier etc would shut down automatically with no signal.
Others wanted the digital audio to remain on, as their DAC etc had a delay to sync with a music stream, so in this case the Squeeze XYZ outputs digital silence when off, meaning no loss of music when starting to play. So the choice depends on you equipment and what you want to happen.
