If I recall correctly, in the days of vinyl LPs, bass was mixed to mono
as this allowed the excursions of the cutting head and subsequently the
stylus to be reduced. This took advantage of the inability of the
listener to locate the source of a low frequency sound, so there was no
point having it in stereo anyway.

The question is whether this is still the norm in CD mixes, and I am
afraid I do not know. You could go down the tried and tested 'suck it
and see' approach.
