I agree, Phil. I've chosen a three way active plus an an active sub. So you can go "more than three way" but it doesn't have to be in one box. Many good subs are quite large so the separation can be useful.
I've heard Meridian and they sound great. However, I don't think digital active has a fundamental advantage over analogue active. The differences will be, by and large, due to implementation. Passive versus active is different because active has fundamental advantages over passive. (Of course not every active system is better than every passive system - these fundamental advantages may still be lost to differences of implementation.)
