Both the Duet Receiver and Touch are 24-bit devices. They both always output a 24-bit bitstream via s/pdif and TOSLINK, regardless of what went into them. The Touch has a better performing s/pdif circuit which will show audible improvements over the Receiver into certain DAC's. The Touch firmware (by which I mean all of the code that runs on the device itself) is not completely "open source". It is copyright Logitech. This is no different to any other device you might buy (and better than most!).
