My DAC has three coax inputs (I use one), an optical (I use) and a USB (I use). It makes sense to put my money into the business end - the high quality audio bit - and not much into the cheap and reliable inputs (plural) into the process - shifting bits.
Any line level component forms a very mundane and simple part of the audio chain. All the interesting and difficult bits are at either end - recording acoustics, microphones, loudspeakers and playback acoustics. I don't think there's any sane justification for spending more than a few thousand credits on a DAC which makes some Linn players , dCS etc "insane" in my book.
