squeezelite sounds pretty awful out of the box, have you tried jlp which is a modified portaudio/squeezelite. HDMI into the m51 is not the best either, better results from say a J Kenny Cuinas + coax or mf vlink 192 aes/ebu. I guess you got win 2012 via msdn otherwise how do you justify £600 on an O/s + £100 for the optimiser. The problem with HDMI is that it's designed for encrypted signals so there is a bit of processing going on which can be heard in comparison to sp/dif, AES/EBU.
