In 1985 shortly after the CD was introduced, DACs with 16 bit resolution
were available, for example the Sony CDP ES 610:

Notice that all distortion artifacts are 100 dB or more down.

Please notice that the nonlinear distortion artifacts of this device
includes several that are only about 50 dB down.
