Yes that would be a good baseline.

While MPD and SL have the capability for sound
manipulation/conversion/etc. it can be bypassed to allow bit-perfect
play back.

A long time ago I experimented with Alsa-Player, it sounds better than
anything and just like APlay imo.

If I had the know how or were a manufacturer I'd use APlay or AlasPlayer
for sure. I good programmer with enough time/money/resources could do
this...
