My limited experience with room correction is comprised of the Audessy DSP in my Marantz HTR. it came with a microphone and a cardboard stand which a set up in the primary listening position and ran the set up. Based on how much better the surround sound sounds compared with the older Marantz that the new one replaced, I would say microphone based set up with a DSP is the way to go.
