Recommended Kids' TV Shows
Deciding which television programs to let your children
watch can be a tough call. You have a lot more than
"Sesame Street" and "Barney" to choose from
nowadays. And lest we be accused of pushing television
on impressionable young minds, a disclaimer: Young
(and older) children shouldn't watch too much television
(get more specific viewing guidelines). Still, there's little
harm in occasionally tuning in to programs that provide a
healthy dose of entertainment and education.
When looking for appropriate programs for kids under 3,
choose those with catchy songs, simple dialog, and
colorful visuals. Where to start? Try one of these.

The Big Comfy Couch
Join Molly the Doll and her clown friend Loonette in this
PBS-produced show geared specifically to a pre-K
audience. The program is so fast paced that it's
occasionally confusing for children. But to its credit, the
show does an admirable job of teaching about
cooperation, sharing, and caring about others.

Rugrats
The diaper-clad stars of this series — most notably
Tommy Pickles — look at life from a baby's point of
view. The very young may miss out on the fine details of
the Rugrats' adventures and witticisms (Tommy Pickles:
"A baby's got to do what a baby's got to do"), but should
appreciate cartoon characters who look and behave like
them. This one has parent appeal, too, though you may
find yourself having to explain the ironically named
Angelica's less-than-cherubic behavior.

Wimzie's House
PBS has produced another winner with "Wimzie's House," starring 5-year-old
Wimzie — who is part bird, part dragon. This preschool show deals especially
with
self-esteem and the feelings of others from a child's perspective. We get a
kick
out of the show's non-cliched characters, like Yaya, Wimzie's energetic
150-year-old
grandmother; Wimzie's mother, Graziella, who flies an airplanes for a
living;
and her dad Rouzzo, a firefighter who loves gardening. A PC family, but not
annoyingly so.

Sesame Street
Much of this superb, classic show is too sophisticated for the very young.
On the
flip side, the program is smart and funny on levels that both adults and
children
enjoy. And, of course, there are the Muppets. What's not to love?

Arthur
We endorse this bespectacled aardvark's television program because it's fun,
easy to watch, and not too complicated. Plus, the story lines often focus on
children's worries and conflicts and how to resolve them.

Teletubbies
Understandably, many find this show spookily surrealistic and feel uneasy
about
babylike characters with televisions where their stomachs should be. The
show
can leave you with the sensation that you've just had a weird, pleasant
dream.
(And who knows, exactly, why babies and toddlers are so mesmerized?) Its
biggest selling point: "Teletubbies" is the easiest of all the kids' shows
for very
young children to grasp.

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood
The subtle genius of Fred Rogers is that he knows not to condescend — his
slow,
friendly manner makes the show easy to watch and calming, especially amid
all
the rest of the clatter on television. Although some conversations may go
over the
heads of children under 3, there's plenty for them to learn from and enjoy.
Thomas the Tank Engine
An endearing character who's a winner on video as well as on television.
Verbally,
this program may prove a little difficult to follow, but the visuals redeem
it for
toddlers and younger. Later, you can read your child some of the books in
the
Thomas series.
Barney & Friends
So sue us. We're all a little tired of the big purple dinosaur, but the
truth is this
show does a good job of dealing creatively with cognitive, emotional,
social, and
physical development, making it prime-time viewing for toddlers.
