Hi Lennie,
An on-line storage service is the last place I would use to store my files.
1. It's someone elses computer.
2. Your upload speed is much slower than your download speed, so it takes
too much time.
3. How will you access your files if your internet connection is down?
4. The cost of the service per year, would pay for a hard drive.
5. Personal files would be at risk, see reason #1
The jury is still out on exactly how long home burned disks are good for.
For my money, a good external drive is the way to go.
They are inexpensive these days, and will last much longer when not in
constant service as the
one in your computer containing the operating system.
If you are looking to backup your music and video and personal files, a disk
imaging program is not necessary, unless you are cramped for space.
Keeping a simple copy of these files on an external drive is a good plan.
I have an internal drive that is 8 years old and still works just fine.

Hi David,

I am still going around and around (getting dizzy!) trying to figure
out what kind of backup I should use for all my music and recordings.
I tried the trial version of Carbonite and I am not enthusiastic
about leaving my computer on for days to backup a lot of GB.

Now, I am thinking about the disk imaging program again. Just one
question. How long did it take for you to backup your system on CDs
and approximately what was the size of the data that you backed up.
Does anyone on the list have any idea what the life expectancy of an
external hard drive is? I was told that an internal hard drive
usually have a life expectancy of about 4 years.

Also, $40 for the imaging software is a lot easier to manage than $50
per year for Carbonite.

Your comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Lennie
