Hi Lennie, Yes another two cents comments on disk imaging.
I am kind of in the same boat as you when it comes to backing of music and such. I have a HUGE collection pushing well over a 100 gigs which means a lot of CDs if I went that route. Currently, I have an internal 400 gig hard drive and a network attched storage drive of 250 gigs (IDE hard drive with external enclosure, value $100). On both drives I have a copy of all my music files. I mainly do a DOS command to copy my data or I use Ghost or some other sync program to match folders. This is working pretty well for me. Ghost typically will image 15 gigs in 25 minutes with medium compression. Now, what I really invision doing is getting a Western Digital My Book external drive with 1 terabyte of storage (around $280). These drives come with a RAID configuration so that you have one drive of 500 gigs and a mirrored copy of 500 gigs. If one fails, you can replace it and still have your data on the other drive. I've thought about online storage, but that seems like a lot of waiting with slow upload speeds. Also, with some cable companies wanting to monitor and tier charges for bandwidth use, it's not sounding good. I am not sure about the hard drive death you mention, 4 years? I'm using drives that I've had for over 10 years in some fashion. Drives fail when you don't take care of them, i.e. never running disk defrag or reformatting occassionally. I've started running Spinrite on my drives from grc.com to prolong the life (only works with magnetic drives). CDRs and such are thought to only last about 10-15 years. I know from my experience, I've had backups fail just because of the disks themselves. I'm mainly hard drive backups only and prices keep dropping. Now, if you are set on burning the images to disk, I would look at getting a dual-layer DVD writer for your computer. You can find them anywhere from $40 to $100. Hope some of that makes sense. You have options, just picking one is the hard part.
