Ltd Release already do this kind of promotion at juniors. It is all
   well and good,
but none of the university joiners see any high level ultimate until
   they have been
playing for 6 months and possible worse for juniors.
Universities generally have the best facilities to allow for an event.
   As I mentioned,
this event should be aimed at local schools to be included.
What would you have done. You haven't provided any ideas at all!
   Would you rather
we toured every single school in the country? As roger said:
I'm sure Clapham 3 and LeedsLeedsLeeds would be delighted to travel the
length of the country for yet another weekend of ultimate. Not.

Using the finalist was just an example, of course it doesn't have to
   be them, but think
back to when you were at school. If someone told you that a football
   team was coming
to do a demonstration and skills set, would you have wanted any team
   that played in any
of the leagues or would have wanted one of the top teams from the top
   division?
The later is easier to promote.
All I'm suggesting, is to add to what has been discussed (and
   hopefully implemented) in the
past regarding promotion to beginners (of all ages) and provide an
   opportunity for the sport
to be played at a high standard for many to see during the early
   stages of recruitment, with a
skill set to back that up. The public need to see the sport and then
   currently don't!
An event like this would not only include those wanting to play, but
   also parents or friends
who have no intention of playing. These people could be the 'fans'
   that would want to see
more of the sport. It is not only players that we should be looking
   to gain.
One event now, could become many events in the future with growth.

I have to say that I think you have got it completely wrong.

The fact that most new players currently come from university should tell us
in of itself where we should be focusing promotion efforts. The primary
focus should be on Junior ultimate. The younger you introduce ultimate to
new people the more of them you will managed to keep, and the better they
will be (and thus the better the overall standard). It is no surprise (at
least not to me) that the countries with the best Junior ultimate are the
countries with the best standard of Ultimate throughout.

Also, while getting the finalists from Nationals to do some promotion is a
fine idea, it is not enough. We should be encouraging EVERYONE to do
something to promote ultimate. It is not just the very top teams that can
convince people this is a sport worth playing. Every team out there should
be aware of the local schools and Unis that have teams (or don't), and try
to get involved and help them out.

You certainly don't want to get into the situation where only the top teams
are expected to (or deemed capable of) promoting the sport. I maybe reading
too much into it, but that is the impression your post gives me off the bat.

Subject: [BD] promotion of ultimate

Most of our new players currently come from university. There are
generally many new comers who had some initial interest but that
initial interest is lost for one reason or another.

Maybe we could assist this interest with a day of display games.
Possibly, the finalists from the Nationals could each play demonstration
games at one university. The university of choice could be decided by
either bids due to facilities (for example covered seating stands,
grounds,
etc.) or by competition (maybe the university to sign the most new
comers).

After the demonstrations the spectators then get training from the
various players, providing a very big workshop from the best talent
in the country. Of course, other students from differing universities
should be welcome to attend and the winning university should also be
seen to promote the occassion to local schools.

Answers on a postcard!
