fter a year of complete devotion to the turntable, I entered the 1991 East Coast DMC. I placed third and although I was frustrated I didn't win, That night ended up being a pivotal turning point in my career. Steve D, inventor of beat juggling and winner of the 91 DMC battle I entered, asked me to become a member of his crew, The X-men, which later became The X-ecutioners. As a member of the X-ecutioners I became part of one of the most influential turntable bands in the world. I recorded full length LPs for major labels (Loud, Columbia), worked with multi-platinum bands like Linkin Park, made appearances on MTV, The David Letterman Show, and Last Call w/Carson Daly, just to touch the surface. However, the more success we achieved the more I began feeling limitations were being put on my creativity. I started feeling pressure to make music that would reach commercial success and as a result I realized I was forcing my creativity to make record companies happy. Luckily, opportunities arose for me to freely express my creativity on the side. I managed to record 2 solo albums (the Ablist and Sound Event) and I also collaborated with artist like Herbie Hancock and Bob James on other projects. Eventually, these outlets still couldn't deflect the creative stress I felt from dealing with the pressures of trying to record platinum X-ecutioner albums. So in September of 2004, I made one the most difficult decisions I ever made in my life. I chose to leave the X-ecutioners in hopes of regaining the creative freedom I missed so much. So now I start work on the next opus in my career-one that leaves me with more opportunity and risk than ever before. . No longer do I have anyone's shoulders to lean on; It's just me now!
My next album, War Games, will be my 3rd solo album. With this new creative freedom, my aim is to make a social statement this time around. A totally new concept in turntable music. I want to spark minds and challenge how we view the events going on in the world today. The album features Large Professor, Akinyele, Prints Haze, Melo-D (Beat Junkies), DJ Quest, Ricci Rucker, Toadstyle, Bob James, Breez Evahflowin, Psycho Les (Beatnuts), Dave McMurray and Anthony Saffery (Cornershop). So here is to a new creative journey. The ride is free so hop on!Featured DJs: Awesome 2

Scion Resident DJ: Haul and Mason
Djs Haul and Mason's unique approach to four-turntable performances seriously ups the ante of the art form, incorporating hip hop turntablism and house-style mixing into meticulously planned party-rocking sets that, while focusing on hip-hop, cover all genres of dance music. In recent months, the amount of attention surrounding the duo has greatly increased. Recent accomplishments include landing national print campaigns with Ocean Pacific (OP Classic) and Live Mechanics clothing, won the URB Magazine's Mixtape Contest, being chosen as Los Angeles' resident Djs for the innovative Scion Metro events, Haul's naming as best Selector by SF Weekly Magazine for 2003, and URB Magazine's selection of the duo in the 2004 "Next 100" issue. www.haulandmason.comScion Resident DJ: Rasta Root
He goes by the moniker Dj Rasta Root. And for 10 years he has been spreading his interpretation of Hip Hop through out the world. Originally from Canada, Roots has traveled from the US to Europe to Japan spinnin' nothing but the hottest joints, taking elements of turntablism as well as club mixing, to bring what he calls a "styleless style". For the past 14 years, one of the founding member of Smokin' Needles Records, Dj Rasta Root has become an integral part of hiphop worldwide. He has spun Japan, Europe, Philipines, Canada, US, and most of the Caribbean. He brings the party to any club, radio show, or live stage. He's bringing seamless mixes with a great selection coupled with a sense of the crowd he is playing for.
He currently controls the turntables and produces for the likes of A Tribe Called Quest's Phife Dawg. Together with Phife, they run Smokin' Needles Records. Rasta Root produced the first single from Smokin' Needles in 2003 called 'U Know U Want It', which also features label affiliates Jax, Hawkeye, and Slick & Rose. Recently released in Japan, Slick & Rose's debut Japan-only release, 'Objects in the Mirror' boasts 4 superb beats by Rasta Root. Roots plans to blaze tracks for Jax, Hawkeye, Dwele, Consequence, and many many more. Of course he will be in contention for beat placement on the highly anticipated reunion album by A Tribe Called Quest.
Rasta Root has put out solid mix tapes consistently that get great reviews in many publications. Rasta Root, Phife, and Jax recently departed to Japan for the Smokin' Needles 2003 Winter Tour. They entertained US military bases and local Japanese hip hop fans. There are serious plans to tour Japan again, Europe, and Australia in 2004. Catch Roots on stage with Phife or in the dj booth at any club or stage worldwide.RSVP at www.scion.com/metro
