Building a momentum for the Movement

Message From the Grassroots
The Official National Mobilization Report for the MMM

by Dr. Benjamin C. Muhammad

Organizing and mobilizing the Millions More Movement (MMM) is indeed a unique and blessed challenge, because it gives an opportunity to network diverse individuals, organizations and communities into a unified movement for positive change. The MMM is more than a one-day or three-day event; it is a movement that will bring together millions of people who are committed to improving the quality of life, particularly communities who have suffered from oppression, injustice and inequality.

The spirit of the Million Man March 10 years ago was the spirit of God. The spirit of the Millions More Movement is the sprit of God, and we are very thankful to God that we are blessed with the vision of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, who called for the Million Man March in 1995 and who has called for the Millions More Movement.

I am pleased to report that, since the May 2 press announcement that launched the Millions More Movement, hundreds of thousands of people have responded via email, letters, phone calls, text messaging and blogging. We are also expanding our reach to millions of people throughout America and the world, with the use of cyberspace. A momentum is now building. As the national mobilization director, I am honored to work under the leadership of Minister Farrakhan, the convener of the MMM, and Rev. Willie Wilson, the national executive director of the MMM.

Recently, a 30-page mobilization manual for the MMM has been made, published and is available on the MillionsMoreMovement.com website. Local organizers can request the manual from at the website.

The purpose of the manual is to assist dedicated volunteers and supporters of the MMM in the systematic organization and mobilization necessary to build the Movement and to achieve a successful international and national event on October 15, 2005 in Washington, D.C.

The manual is also prepared to help to ensure the implementation of a coordinated plan of action to fulfill the long-term vision, mission, demands and covenant." It presents a "how to" for organizers, activists, grassroots and community leaders and supporters of the MMM. It serves as the guideline toward the standardization of the fundamental principles of organization and the official structure for mobilizing millions of persons to participate in the MMM."

The preamble of the manual quotes Minister Farrakhan from his vision statement for the Commemoration and the Movement: "This is the challenge of the time. Within us is the will to do this; however, our will must be fed by the insatiable desire to see our people free, justified and equal with the best in civilized society. Therefore, it is proper that we seize this moment in time, recapture the spirit of the million man, woman, youth, and family marches, and make the necessary sacrifice to save ourselves and our people."

The planning of a mobilization of this magnitude will require paying close attention to the complexity of details and a strong commitment to maintain a focused discipline while organizing persons from diverse backgrounds. We intend to organize statewide committees, called SOCs, in all 50 states. People are organizing now in Alaska and Hawaii, along with the other 48 states.

Ten years ago at the Million Man March, we had approximately 300 local organizing committees (LOCs). For the Millions More Movement, we intend to organize 500 LOCs, which will vary in size depending on city or town.

Each LOC needs to be registered. Once it is established, its leaders should visit the website and follow the procedures to register online. There are five organizational units that make up the MMM: 1) The national organizing committee; 2) The international organizing committee; 3) Seven regional organizing committees; 4) Fifty state organizing committees; and 5) Five hundred local organizing committees.

There is room for everyone to work in this movement-building process.

As in 1995 and 2000, it will also be true in 2005 for the Black press to serve a very important role, for it is the drumbeat of the Black community. It has to be utilized, not only to raise awareness about the MMM, but the press should be the vehicle where the progress of the mobilization should be reported. The mainstream news media is attempting to discourage and even ignore the momentum that is being built. For people who really want to know what is happening with the MMM, you have to read The Final Call and other Black newspapers, because that is the place where you will get the truth about the MMM.

To use a hip hop term, there are always player-haters; and there are player-haters who are attempting to distort and deny the reality that there is a growing momentum now building in favor of the MMM across America and throughout many parts of the world. We are receiving emails from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. The Egyptian press has printed headlines about the MMM. There is a growing hip hop community in South Africa and a number of hip hop artists have already expressed their solidarity and hope to link via satellite and webcast on Oct. 15. So, in truth, the mobilization for the MMM is not just domestic, it is an international and global mobilization.

It is good news for Brothers and Sisters who are in the urban centers of America to know that there are millions of people around the world who, not only care about the plight of Blacks and Latinos in America's urban centers, but who are also in solidarity with our movement for change.

The MMM is a movement to change America and the world. This is a participatory movement. To the extent to which all of those who desire a better way of life will roll up their sleeves and work to help build this Movement is the extent to which we will be successful.
