New arts space 801 Projects and Artemis who formerly managed Little Havana’s PS 742 joined forces to launch a new series, experimental8. Inspired by the successful Surreal Saturdays at PS 742, experimental8 will incorporate the visual arts, performance and interdisciplinary art forms. On Saturday, October 1, 2005, 801 Projects and Artemis celebrate the official formation of 801 Projects and Artemis’ new home with the first installation of experimental8: FIRST CALL co-curated by artist Carlos Betancourt and Artemis’ Director Susan Caraballo.  experimental8 will be held every 3 months at 801 Projects located just south of downtown Miami and a few blocks west of Brickell Avenue at 801 SW 3rd Ave in Miami.

801 Projects is an exciting new arts center conceived in 2003 by local businesswoman Neli Santamarina and artist Carlos Betancourt.  Over the last couple of years, artists have been moving into the 2nd floor of the historic Jose Marti Building located immediately south of the 8th Street exit off 1-95.  In 2004, resident artists organized two highly successful events including Thunder in the Night to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach. 801 Projects’ mission is to advance and promote contemporary and innovative artistic _expression_ and develop professional and community-based arts education.

For experimental8: FIRST CALL, Betancourt and Caraballo have co-curated a group show including guest artists Edward Bobb, Branko Belfranin, Octavio Campos, Dimitry SaÏd Chamy, Jason Ferguson, Rebecca Guarda, Julie Lara Kahn, William Keddell, Rafael Roig, Wendy Wischer and Ramon Williams. Also participating will be 801 Projects resident artists including Ana Carballosa, Elizabeth Cerejido, Roberto Dominguez, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Umberto Peña, Ismael Gomez-Peralta, Pedro Portal, Arnaldo Simon, Angela Vallela and Ben Weinberg.

experimental8 kicks off with FIRST CALL on Saturday, October 1, 2005 [9pm – midnight] at 801 Projects located at 801 SW 3 Ave in Miami’s Brickell area. experimental8 is free and open to the public. The event will begin at 9:00 p.m. experimental8: FIRST CALL is sponsored and will coincide with the grand opening of Tinta y Café owned and operated by Santamarina. Public parking is available under the 1-95 overpass (entrance on SW 8 Street).  Valet parking will also be available. For more information and directions, call 305.324.0585.
