46664 SOUTH AFRICA TO BE SCREENED ON THE COMMUNITY CHANNEL ON WORLD AIDS DAY46664 SOUTH AFRICA, the second event in Nelson Mandela's 46664 campaign to raise global awareness of HIV/AIDS and funds for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, staged at Fancourt, George, on 19 March will be screened in its entirety on the Community Channel on World AIDS Day on 1st December from 8:00pm to 11:00pm GMT. The Community Channel is available on Sky 585, Telewest 233, NTL 14 & 511 and Freeview 87.
Spearheaded by 46664 Ambassadors Annie Lennox, and rock legends, Queen with Paul Rodgers, the event focuses attention on the vital role of women in the frontline to stop HIV/AIDS by featuring a host of international female stars, including India.Arie, Katie Melua and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Will Smith presented the event, which also showcased an array of local artists including Mafikizolo, Prime Circle, Kabelo, Blk Sonshine, Karen Zoid, Art Matthews and 46664 South African Ambassadors Johnny Clegg, Danny K and Mandoza.
Addressing the sell-out crowd, Mr Mandela said: "Like many of you, I cannot rest easily while our beloved continent is ravaged by a deadly epidemic… For every woman and girl violently attacked, we reduce our humanity. For every moment we remain silent, we conspire against our women. For every woman infected by HIV, we destroy a generation." An estimated 5.3 million of South Africa's 45 million people live with HIV, more than in any other country, a growing number of whom are young women.
46664 SOUTH AFRICA was made possible by the generous support of philanthropist Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner, co-founder and chairman of SAP, who not only gave the venue for free to stage the concert but also underwrote the entire cost of the concert to ensure that 100% of all ticket revenue could be donated directly to the Nelson Mandela Foundation in the names of the performing artists.
Inspired by the vision and leadership of Mr Mandela, 46664 was set up by Dave Stewart, Bono, with Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen in 2003 with the aim of raising awareness of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, as well as funds, to help the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Further 46664 events were held in Madrid, Spain in April 2005 and Tromso, Norway in June 2005.
