The FIU African New World Studies Alumni Association Presents the 3rd Annual Organic Hip-Hop Symposium

Legendary Artist, Brother J of X-Clan to Speak on the Relationship of Hip-Hop and Pan-Africanism

(Miami,FL)— For the third year in a row the Florida International University African-New World Studies Alumni Association is proud to present a quality Hip-Hop show for the whole family. The Organic Hip-Hop symposium takes place on Friday, February 24, 2006 at FIU Biscayne Bay Campus.

In the tradition of previous years, the theme of the gathering will be focused on reclaiming Hip-Hop’s original cultural roots and identity.  This year we will study the relationship between Hip-Hop and Pan-Africanism and its role as a cultural activist movement.  The key note speaker will be an inspirational and powerful voice in Hip-Hop and Pan-Africanism, legendary spokesperson of the Rap group X-Clan, Brother J.

As a young Brooklynite in the early 90s, Brother J was a member of the activist group The Black Watch Movement. From there the rap group known as X-Clan was formed, which cleverly fused ancient African traditions and spirituality with rhyme, rhythm, and reason.  The group released two highly successful albums, To The East Blackwards (1990) and Xodus (1991).  After the group disbanded, Brother J continued to drop seeds of wisdom musically with another group he formed, The Dark Sun Riders.  Seeing the need to fill a void in the current materialistically stagnant bling (or ice) age of Hip-Hop, Brother J has regrouped X-Clan (now known as X-Clan Millennium Cipher) and is once again on the mission to teach the Hip-Hop community the importance of reclaiming the wisdom and spirituality of our ancestors as well as maintaining a critical open eye to the ever changing world we are living in today.

Along with the lecture, a vegetarian style buffet will be planned for all in attendance as well as a libations ceremony by The Sol Griots, an African dance exhibition by Delou Africa Dance Ensemble, B-Boy/B-Girl dance exhibition sponsored by Catalyst, a Graffiti

and Urban Art expo and performances by local artists, including Mecca A.K.A. Grimo, Sista Flo, The Hip-Hop band OYE, spoken word artist Kimani and Omniscient of Flow Official.  The entertainment portion of the evening will be hosted by Afrika Baby Bam.  The sound will be provided by the Brass King for Above Ground Music and music by the legendary DJ Snowhite.

The gathering will take place February 24th at FIU Biscayne Bay Campus Wolfe University Center Ball Room.  Suggested $5 minimum donations will go to the development of an African New World Studies Scholarship Fund.
