Residents still storm-weary after Hurricane Charley struck less than three weeks ago filled up their gas tanks, boarded up their houses and bought emergency supplies ahead of Frances� possible landfall somewhere on the state�s Atlantic coast late Friday or early Saturday. EMERGENCY OFFICIALS MAKE PLANS AS FRANCES NEARS FLORIDA As Hurricane Frances strengthened into a Category 4 storm and headed for Florida�s east coast, emergency management authorities prepared on Wednesday to evacuate hundreds of thousands of residents. Meanwhile, authorities on Florida�s west coast began their own plans to offer what aid they could to evacuees or the counties that had aided them after Hurricane Charley. COLLIER SCHOOLS OUT EARLY TODAY; ACTIVITIES CANCELED Southwest Florida emergency managers and government officials will huddle again today to decide whether to open evacuation shelters for east coast refugees fleeing Hurricane Frances. If Frances spares Southwest Florida a direct hit, tens of thousands of east coast refugees could be headed to this part of the state to flee the storm�s path on a weekend when hotels already are virtually booked for the Labor Day holiday. WEARY CHARLEY VICTIMS BRACING FOR ANOTHER HIT One thing the storm-weary residents of southwest Florida don�t need is another hurricane. Still cleaning up and recovering emotionally from the devastation of Hurricane Charley less than three weeks ago, people here were keeping an eye on Hurricane Frances as it gathered strength and churned toward Florida�s east coast Wednesday. Depending on where Frances makes landfall, Charley victims could endure another punishing round of high winds and rough weather as the gigantic storm tears across the peninsula.
