JUST WEEKS AFTER CHARLEY, FLORIDA READIES FOR HURRICANE FRANCES
Nearly half a million Floridians were urged Wednesday to evacuate as Hurricane Frances
and its 140-mph winds could deliver the worst double hurricane strike on one state in
at least a century. Residents still storm-weary after Hurricane Charley struck less
than three weeks ago filled up their gas tanks, boarded up their houses and bought
emergency supplies ahead of Frances possible landfall somewhere on the states
Atlantic coast late Friday or early Saturday.

EMERGENCY OFFICIALS MAKE PLANS AS FRANCES NEARS FLORIDA
As Hurricane Frances strengthened into a Category 4 storm and headed for Floridas
east coast, emergency management authorities prepared on Wednesday to evacuate
hundreds of thousands of residents. Meanwhile, authorities on Floridas west coast
began their own plans to offer what aid they could to evacuees or the counties that
had aided them after Hurricane Charley.

COLLIER SCHOOLS OUT EARLY TODAY; ACTIVITIES CANCELED
Southwest Florida emergency managers and government officials will huddle again today
to decide whether to open evacuation shelters for east coast refugees fleeing
Hurricane Frances. If Frances spares Southwest Florida a direct hit, tens of thousands
of east coast refugees could be headed to this part of the state to flee the storms
path on a weekend when hotels already are virtually booked for the Labor Day holiday.

WEARY CHARLEY VICTIMS BRACING FOR ANOTHER HIT
One thing the storm-weary residents of southwest Florida dont need is another
hurricane. Still cleaning up and recovering emotionally from the devastation of
Hurricane Charley less than three weeks ago, people here were keeping an eye on
Hurricane Frances as it gathered strength and churned toward Floridas east coast
Wednesday. Depending on where Frances makes landfall, Charley victims could endure
another punishing round of high winds and rough weather as the gigantic storm tears
across the peninsula.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
ANALYSIS: DEMOCRATS PRESS KERRY TO STEP UP ATTACKS ON BUSH
Anxiously watching President Bushs convention, Democratic leaders are urging John
Kerry to step up his attack on the Republican incumbent before eroding approval
ratings become a serious political problem. The candidate and his beleaguered staff
are being flooded with advice, much of it contradictory.

IN NEAPOLITAN:
NANCY STETSON: IS THERE HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF MUSIC?
Im a sucker for magazine lists, especially those that name the best books, CDs or
movies. I dont know what it is about them. Maybe I just want to see if I agree. The
current issue of Vibe magazine offers 51 Albums You Better Have! The article lists
everything from Aaliyah to Wu-Tang Clan, with the numeric names The 2 Live Crew and
8Ball and MJG added at the end.
