I keep hoping that the patent office will wake up and realize that
software patents are a bad idea. Some of the ones floating out there are
just ludicrous. For instance, Microsoft has a patent on deleting
files...That's obviously unenforceable, but it's a pretty good example
of how broad the things are. Right now it's basically impossible to
create a new video codec without violating some patent.

Thankfully, Apple isn't *that* powerful.  *Yet*.

That is a big *yet* tho.  Some of these patents Apple is filing for are
*scary*.

The whole attitude is scary, really.  That grumpygamer blog post says
some of this in a nice way.
