Build it yourself.

I put together an AMD 2600+ machine for under $1000 this summer using an
MSI motherboard, 1GB 3200 DDR RAM, a Thermalrite heat sink, a CDRW
drive, a DVD drive, an 80GB hard drive plus cables, power supply,
floppy, case, etc. The one high end thing I put in there was a NVidia
card which set me back about $250. The total price was around $800, you
could easily sink the rest of the $2000 into peripherials.
