Several years ago I had the experience of using the commercial product Central Dispatch from Resonate (sucked up by Sun I believe). http://www.resonate.com/prod_centr_disp.html It was an end to end fail-over and load balancing solution, and at the time it ran on Linux. I believe that they removed support for Linux circa 2000, 2001. It was a really bang-on product though.
