Heh. Dan went to a lot of effort to make this the behavior. I have also complained about it, though on a scale of zero to really upset I am a 0.1 on it. The argument is: Firefox doesn't grab the selection on ctl-L. Spec says you should only grab the selection on "user actions" or some such. Whether ctl-L means "highlight the text in the omnibox" or it means "move focus to the omnibox, and by the way make my next keypress clobber the text already in there" is up for debate.
