I can't speak to your particular case, but I've had problems in general
with autorotation, particularly in apps with complex view hierarchies.

I've found in general that, where possible, handling your own rotation
leads to more consistent and better behaved results.

An example of how to do this can be found in Apple's AlternateViews
sample app:
