If it's the same System and Finder as what you have on the SE already then you can copy the file that got damaged and reboot the SE without wiping the hard disk. In either case, replacing either the System file or the Finder file, whichever you changed with ResEdit, will allow the SE to reboot as normal. That's some of the magic of the Macintosh.
