You do not have to be a current or former government employee to be considered for this position. This position is career-seasonal in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. You may work a minimum of 34 weeks (17 pay periods) but generally not more than 50 weeks (25 pay periods) a year. Actual work schedule and period of non-pay is contingent upon operational needs and/or weather conditions. The employee is expected to be placed in a non-pay status from approximately 1/7/18 to 5/12/2018. Employee will work full time when in pay status. Duties The incumbent of this position serves as an Objects Conservator with the Museum Services Program, Intermountain Region, duty stationed at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center (WACC), Tucson, Arizona. WACC is a principal curatorial facility for cultural and natural resources collections and archives and the home of two on-site conservation laboratories. The facility provides care for over 14.5 million items from over 70 parks in the Intermountain and Pacific West Regions, several service wide programs of the National Park Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and several Native American tribes. The conservation program provides the full range of services required for the preservation of museum collections, primarily archeological, ethnographic, and historical objects, at this facility and the more than 80 park areas throughout the region. The incumbent conducts object examination and surveys, performs and documents preventive and interventive conservation measures, and provides support to parks and the WACC curation and archives teams with regard to preservation and conservation issues for objects on exhibit and in storage. The incumbent of this position reports to the Senior Conservator for the region. Most of the work is performed in an office, collections repository, or laboratory at WACC or similar locations in parks. The work requires mental alertness, exceptional manual dexterity for performing conservation treatments, and mobility. The work requires the ability to concentrate for long periods. Although often sedentary, the work also involves periods of activities demanding a certain amount of exertion such as working at different heights, moving heavy objects or equipment, bending and reaching. Working with collections can involve prolonged exposure to hazardous materials and equipment. The use of power tools may involve physical hazards. Specific safety equipment and procedures are required. Some travel to other facilities and parks, as well as to training and professional meetings, is required.
