For some reason, Aurora enables itself on some x86 comps, but not others. I don't know why. I don't think aurora slows things down, in mdk7, it didn't. (Aurora on mdk8 doesn't start on my x86, no clue why.). Perhaps you should try Old-Style monitors. They show everything that the text-mode does, except it look nicer. How to change, I have no idea.
