-Caveat Lector- -Cui Bono?- Who Would Call Alan Keyes an African wild Pig? Democrats Fear Alan Keyes By: Mary Mostert, Analyst, Original Sources (www.originalsources.com) January 10, 1999 A Commentary on Republican Presidential Candidate Alan Keyes by Bill Maxwell, an editorial writer for the St. Petersburg Times has been making the rounds via e-mail and the Internet. I received a copy of the editorial by the district coordinator of the Keyes campaign in my area and my first reaction on reading it was to wonder if Maxwell, whom I had never heard of, was a throwback from the 1930s and 1940s. It had been years since I had read such blatant and vicious racism expressed. Maxwell started his editorial: By all standards, some creatures are just plain strange, making us do double takes because their compositions or habits or appearances defy our sense of logic and our way of viewing reality. Take the wildebeest, the warthog, the hyena, the brown pelican, the Shar-Pei. These animals, seemingly wrought by committee, make us laugh or shake our heads. Another such creature, of the human kind -- and perhaps the strangest of all -- is the black Republican. Do not laugh. This is a serious matter, given yet another Alan Keyes run -- absurd as it may be -- for the White House. He is the talk show host who exhibits an obnoxious Messianic complex that emerges each time he appears on TV to debate his white counterparts. So, we find out rather quickly that Presidential Candidate Alan Keyes, in the opinion of the editorialist, is both a laughable and an obnoxious creature, comparable to a warthog, or African wild pig. Maxwell continued: My grandfather, a smart Pentecostal pastor who died five years ago, would have said that Keyes, along with others like him, is "out there cuttin' up 'round them white folks." This was my gramps' portrayal of black sycopha nts, whose raison d'etre was pleasing their white "superiors." That paragraph got my attention, having grown up in the deep South. That quote from the "smart Pentecostal pastor" sounds like a deep South, black cultural insult. The Southern whites didn't use that sort of phrase. Maxwe ll explained in the modern version the meaning of the insult. Those blacks who desired an education and who chose to make the best of a bad situation were often reminded of their "place" by less ambitious blacks. This was a phenomenon that was described by the crawdads in a bucket analogy. If you put a bunch of crawfish (we called them crawdads) in a bucket some of them will try very hard to climb out of the bucket and just as the most ambitious of the bunch manages to get to the bucket rim, a less ambitiou s brother will reach up with his claw, grab him and yank him back down in the bucket. In the editorial, Maxwell appears to be reaching up from the bottom of his bucket and trying to pull Alan Keyes back down: After each debate, Keyes declares himself the winner and attacks the press for not praising him. Actually, it isn't Keyes who declares Keyes the winner. It's the overwhelming majority of the viewers of the debate. He is not praised because he acts too much like a kid pledging a fraternity he instinctively dislikes. Doubling Keyes' misery is his pathetic effort to persuade white Republicans to accept him. And therein lies the rub: Black Republicans fail to understand that white Republicans will never accept them as equals. Although they will not acknowledge the truth, white Republicans, like most other whites, view black R epublicans as strange creatures. This statement absolutely enraged Keyes supporters, of course. However, I have assumed that this kind of attack was in the cards once the media concluded that Keyes is an actual threat. After the last debate the Zogby pol l showed that Alan Keyes has moved from 5th to 3rd place among Republicans, overtaking Steve Forbes. The moment Alan Keyes captured third place, the liberal media suddenly announced it was a "two-way race between Bush and McCain." Finding that he can no longer be ignored, the liberal media is moving into the next phase - to destroy him, as they tried to destroy Clarence Thomas, with pure viciousness: Following last week's GOP debate in New Hampshire, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd interviewed Keyes and revealed that the prez wanna-be is an existential mess. He cannot understand why the networks' Sunday morning` talk shows ignore him. "He does not seem to accept the fact that it is his own party that dismisses his candidacy as an oddity, useful only in enabling Republicans to make a perverse claim to diversity," Dowd wrote. With few exceptions (Gen. Colin Powell being a notable example), black Republicans are trotted out like unfinished trophies, Pirandello-like proof that the GOP's "big tent" is real in someone's warped mind. An "existential mess?" Exactly what does THAT mean? For those who haven't wasted their time studying the philosophy of existentialism, it is a philosophy that comes from the word "existence., because it is concerned with man's existence and his situation in the universe. Most existentialists believe that the universe is absurd and irrational, instead of being a logically-organized system. Does this sound like Alan Keyes beliefs? Not at al l! Keyes, has a very clear and well defined belief system that is based on his faith in God. If Maxwell, son of a Pentecostal preacher, has rejected God, he has the right to do so. To call someone else an "existential mes s" because he DOES believe in God would indicated that Maxwell hasn't a clue as to what the philosophy of existentialism actually is. And, finally, Maxwell not only tries to discredit Alan Keyes, but every other black con servative he could think of: White Republicans feign consternation that most blacks find them contemptible, arguing that those mean old Democrats have been black people's real enemy all along. Keyes and others, such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clar ence Thomas, Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts and California businessman Ward Connerly, also spout this nonsense. Keyes told Dowd: "The people who invented this system of racism, segregation, sort of American apartheid, were Demo crats." Oh, please. If Keyes and others are talking about Dixiecrats, then they should say so. They certainly are not talking about the millions of white Democrats who joined blacks against Republicans to secure every pie ce of civil rights legislation. Blacks who switch to the GOP say they do so because they share Republican values on crime, family and self-reliance. I do not know a single black person, except for a handful of vicious thu gs, who see any benefits in crime. Blacks have always opposed crime. Most black people, like whites, love their families. Self-reliance? Until urban renewal used expressways to break up many black communities, black busin esses thrived and people took care of themselves. Such values are not the sole possession of Republicans. By this time, it was perfectly obvious that Maxwell was a diehard Democrat. "Until urban renewal used expressways to break up many black communities...?" And just who was it that shoved urban renewal down the throats of t he black inner city communities? Why, none other than Democrat President Lyndon Johnson and his overwhelmingly Democrat congress, that's who. It was Democrat presidents and Democrat congresses that spent over $5 TRILLION dollars on the "Great Society" programs- which I believe was the prime factor in destroying black inner city families. As I point out in my book, COMING HOME-Families Can Stop the Unraveling of America, "In 1960, among wh ite people, 76.2% of all households were headed by husband and wife, and 17% were headed by females only - and that included widowed, divorced, and never married women. Among non-white, 60.3% of the families were headed b y husband and wife, and 28.7% were headed by women. "The primary goal of governmental intervention through the Great Society programs of Lydon Johnson was to improve the nonwhite statistics. Patrick Moynihan, now a U.S. senator, and others assured America that the alarming statistics relating to black families were, as Du Bois had written, largely economic and caused by racial discrimination against black men. ... By 1971, the statistics showed a decrease in the number of intact husband-an d-wife headed families. Among whites, 71.3% of the families were headed by husband and wife, a 4.9% drop, while among non-whites, 53.5% of the families were headed by husband and wife, a 6.8% drop." Today, of course, in some black inner city areas a whopping 90% of the births of babies are to unwed mothers. Democrat Government has destroyed the black family, re-enslaving them with a modern form of slave-like dependen cy. Maxwell ended his diatribe with: African-Americans do not need hypocrites like Keyes, Thomas and Connerly to lecture them. They certainly do not need the advice of white Republicans. Some blacks, like Gen. Powell, become Republicans because they see clear political advantage or because they work for Republicans. Most others, however, are mean-spirited self-loathers who rarely find anything positive to say about fellow blacks. They out-nasty the worst white racist, calling the likes of Jesse Jackson, the NAACP's Kweisi Mfume and the Urban League's Hugh Price evil men hellbent on destroying America. White Republicans love this kind of stuff. They wink and nod each time black Republicans claim that racism is a thing of the past, that whites and blacks are free to compete equally. Black Republicans have fooled themselv es into believing that white Republicans are their brethren. And, of course, black Republicans delude themselves into believing that they alone are responsible for their success. Strange, passing strange. "Can't think of anything positive to say about fellow blacks?" Can you spot anything positive Maxwell is saying about the black men he has mentioned? What color, do you suppose, is Bill Maxwell? Why is he so convinced tha t blacks must NEVER believe they are "free to compete equally" or believe "that their own efforts are EVER responsible for their success?" Who is this Bill Maxwell that has written such a vicious attack on Alan Keyes? He doesn't use the term, but clearly overtly accuses Alan Keyes of being an "Uncle Tom" who is trying to please the white "boss" by doing some thing ridiculous - running for President. Anyone who has actually heard Alan Keyes debate the other candidates while coping with unfair and unequal time constraints, as imposed by Tim Russert last week, cannot intelligent ly think he is in ANYONE's pocket. Contrary to Maxwell, it isn't "nonsense" or "ridiculous" for Alan Keyes, who happens to be black, to aspire to the presidency. Internet polls of those who have actually watched the debates have shown him as the winner in ALL the debates to date and his campaign is attracting both supporters and money. Tomorrow there will be a press conference in Salt Lake City to announce that he is on the ballot for the Utah March 10th primary. I surfed the web to see what I could find out about Bill Maxwell of the St. Petersburg Times and I found a picture of him. He is an older black man with greying hair. Other columns he has written indicated that his own livelihood is probably dependent upon towing the liberal Democrat line. After the C-span debate, many callers said Keyes had "won the debate." One viewer, a black man, called in to say, "I've always been a Democrat, but after hearing Alan Keyes I'm going to vote Republican. I'm going to vote for Alan Keyes." If blacks find out what Alan Keyes is saying, more and more of them will vote Republican and that scares the daylights out of Democrats. If blacks ever discover that they are being used and manipulated into believing that can't succeed without being on the white man's entitlement plantation, and they start voting for the party who freed them back in the 1860s, why, the Democrats would NEVER win! Power and lots of money is at stake here and rest assured there are lots of Uncle Toms out there who don't want to give up their dependency on the white man and it appears that one of them is Bill Maxwell.
