/dev would be E:\cygwin1.7\dev, not E:\cygwin1.7\E\cygwin1.7\dev. Looks like a bug to me, and the finger of blame points at /etc/postinstall/{00,}bash.sh: DEVDIR="$(cygpath -au "C:/$(cygpath -am /dev/)" | sed 's|/c/\(.\):/|/\1/|')" mkdir -p "$DEVDIR" || result=1 I haven't stared at the sed magic long enough to work out exactly what it does or why, but it looks suspiciously like it assumes that Cygwin is installed on the C drive.
