Perhaps your /etc/profile is damaged. If you open it in a text editor
and it looks okay to you, diff it against /etc/defaults/etc/profile,
that being the version that's installed when the Cygwin package that
owns this file (dunno what it is off the top of my head) sees that it
isn't already present. If it's present, it gets left alone on the
theory that you changed it for a good reason, so damage won't be corrected.
Alternately, you can do a complete uninstall:
http://cygwin.com/faq/faq-nochunks.html#faq.setup.uninstall-all
and then reinstall. This will ensure a clean slate, at the cost of
losing any customizations you've made to Cygwin over the past 8 years.
