I should have been more explicit, I think.  And, perhaps, the problem lies in 
DBD::ODBC, not in DBD::CSV.  I am extracting data from CSV (as you saw, actually pipe 
delimited) using DBD::CSV, then putting it into a DBD::ODBC (MS SQL 2000) database...

I'v brought my laptop home for the weekend, and will try to get this tested on all the 
RDBMSs (don't you love VMWare?) and get back to the list about this on Monday.
