If you have in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 modes like this: Modes "1152x864" "1280x1024" then you will get Xserver running at 1152x864 resolution, but the desktop size will be bigger. Then you select this option from kcontol and it crashes. THis Virtual desktop can be disabled just by adding Virtual 1152 864 below Modes entry. Then desktop will be the same size as current resolution, and kcontrol doesn't crash. I've attached output from this kcrash, but it doesn't look like something useful.
