In that case, could the installer be used as a rescue disc / shell, then the system be updated after correctly mounting partitions and chroot'ing into the resulting environment? As a data point, using the old image, and then updating to the latest available (6.3.x) kernel did not cause any of the issues I'd experienced with the newer installers. I have two such systems running stable for more than a week now.
