Thanks, but this doesn't work. The analog electrical signal is coming out of the computer amd getting into my external speakers via an stereo sound audio cable. It is as if the desktop tasksel installed the software to establish the digital path to the sound card, but failed to install the software for user to set preferences. But I really don't know that this is so. I do know that I have no control over software audio volume.
