pptp

I've installed 4.1b3 and everything works fine, except some of the pptp stuff. We can 
connect to the e-smith box, (I've removed 'require-mppe, and stateless, and changed it 
to mpe-40 so as win95 m/c can connect without mucking around) 
We cannot ping the e-smith box from remote. But everynow and then we can. I want pop3 
from inside pptp rather than external. Any ideas would be appreciated.
