It is cosmetic. Here is the output of ps -ax --forest:

The process is a child of the console command. It retrieves the current
e-smith-release version to print in the top row of the screen. It's obviously
not being reaped cleanly. However, it does die when that console session dies
and another defunct process appears with the next console invocation.
