Hi,
This is going to be long, I'm just not sure what info to give so I'm going
to put in as much as I can in case it "matters".
I contracted a company (off the authorized partner list) to install e-smith
4.1 as the server in our office.
The configuration is a new computer supplied by them for the server with 3
windows98se workstations (existing) with VPN from 1 win98se and 1 win me
home computers. The 3 win 98's had been working peer to peer for approx 12
months without problem.
The network is a 100 meg using cat5 with an 8 port hub and the server is
connected to Telstra cable. The win98se remote is also on telstra and the
Win ME on Optus@home.
For the last week and a half we have had an inoperable computer network.
The network runs for about 30 to 90 mins then goes down for between 4-7
mins. By goes down I mean it shuts down everything. We lose our local
network, no machine can see any other machine, no web browsing , no email.
The win machines are set to browsemaster disabled.
VPN is now off.
BPA login has been installed as 1.3 (as recommended) using the e-smith rpm
for set up.
I have taken each of the win 98 machines off the network in turn, but the
system still fails. I have also tried only leaving one connected at a time.
Still fails. The only thing we haven't tried is nothing connected to the
e-smith box and then check the logs latter (I'll try that tomorrow).
It seems the installers have run out of things to try. I believe they have
been discussing this with e-smith but the answer hasn't been found yet.
I suggested to the installers that I ask here, in case anyone could come up
with the golden answer and they agreed.
I realize this is light on tech details but I'm a manager not a tech, that's
why I contracted the install. If you need logs or anything else email me and
I'll have them sent to you.
If you got this far, thanks for taking the time. I'm not sure if this is the
correct place to post this, apologies if it isn't.
