Hi,

I created an ibay called drop-folder and the description was "This is used
to store files and folders that you want to share with everyone." or
something long and wordy like that. I could see the drop-folder share from
Windows but could not from the Macs. I created another ibay called test and
put "test" for a description. This time, I was able to access it from both.
I thought that netatalk might not like the dash in the name drop-folder so
I created another ibay called dropfolder with the same description as the
original. Same problem as the first situation, Macs could not see the
share. It was only when I created a fourth ibay called pub with a
description "public" that I realized that e-smith uses the description for
the netatalk share name since I saw public in the Chooser, not pub as I had
been expecting. There is evidently some restriction on length of the
netatalk share name. It is probably 32 characters which is the maximum file
name length in Mac OS. I wanted all the users to have the same logical view
of the server so I set the name and description to pub. Having set up
netatalk manually in the past, I cannot think of any good reason to use the
description of the ibay for the netatalk share name. Why not use the same
name that samba uses, i.e. the ibay name? If there is some good reason I am
not aware of to use the description, its length should be limited to less
than 32 characters to avoid the situation I encountered.
