Brandon, I am presently on chapter one of that book.  I picked up the
second edition at the bookstore for only $7.99USD.  It was quite a
bargain over the original price.  So far so good, but I have already run
into a problem with one of the examples.

Maybe I should post it here if I don't get any help from my local LUG...

As for any reference books, I have only been recommended one other book
and it is the pocket reference.  All the other reference material is
freely available online as Rich mentioned earlier.  Don't waste your
money, unless of course you just want to burn money. :)
