...so isn't up to UX experts to establish standards? :) It's like any platform that has a number of uses - it's up to the users to use it in an effective way. The idea is that SharePoint has a number features that you don't have to build out of the box (wikis, blogs, discussion board, repositories).
When done right with standardization and a good taxonomy, it's a great tool. When there's no information architecture, it's a poor tool. Just like any other website. So, if you only use one sharepoint site, then great. But in most cases, these people are using multiple sharepoint sites, put together by different people.
