I used to get a lot of blank stares when I would give my job title. For years many of my friends and family weren't quite sure. Then this past summer I went to the zoo with my fam. They had arrows that were supposed to give you the best complete path through the zoo but instead we got lost. I took that opportunity to explain. I told them I make sure things like that don't happen to users. It worked! Now I try to use everyday examples since interaction design is more than computers. I think I am done hearing "so you are good at computers." *sigh*
