Here's how I rationalize the "their" idiom: he she makes it plural and, thus, their. It's still wrong. My inner nun says to translate it into Latin and see how it works. (Or choose any other language besides English, say, Russian or Japanese.) And partner seems so cold, while significant other seems so mid-70s. Arrgh.
