I have 90,000 messages in my inbox and I can tell you that mail is always sluggish for me. I have noticed no difference in performance better or worse with the new updates. Have you run repair permissions? Have you checked your settings? have you rebuilt the mailbox? I don't use twitterpod but safari crashing and slow sending sound like network issues.

You might remember last week or the week previous that Apple came out with several updates. If I'm not mistaken, it was Leopard 5.3.3 or something but I forget. In any case, using my Macbook Pro has become a pain in the neck since this happened. I get a lot of strange behavior with mail. I've got roughly 250 messages sitting in my inbox that I'm saving. Yes, I am bad at organization. In any case, just about every time I launch mail, rather than opening with the VO cursor at the last read message, it loads up with a message from May of 2007 and I've got to scroll through everything. Its a pain in the neck. In addition, I'll be reading a message or document and the screen will appear to refresh by going black for a second and then, when it comes back, I've lost my place in the document I'm reading. I also notice significant delays when sending mail. Messages sit for several minutes without leaving in many cases. Finally, several programs including Mail, Safari, Twiterpod and others have been frequently crashing. I'm not having fun here in other words. Does anyone know what's up here?
