I have been following the MN Senate race closely online
<http://www.e-democracy.org/2002/senate.html>. The Coleman campaign
(Republican) promised their most active e-mail gatherers various perks
last spring. I am not sure of the size of their list, but they too
have an active e-mail newsletter. See Wellstone's (Democrat) 25,000
e-list member note below.

A poll out today puts the race within the margin of error, with very
few undecideds:
http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/4094731.htm
http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/

I'd join both of their lists <http://www.colemanforsenate.com>
<http://www.wellstone.org/> to compare their use of e-mail in a close
election that may determine the balance of power in the U.S.
Senate. Remember when it comes to online campaigning, the web is a
side show, e-mail is king. (Just my opinion, e-mail in campaigning has
been studied little compared to the web.)

In general ...

Overall, my sense is that the innovations in 2002 online campaigning
focus on organizing core suppporters and volunteers as well as
internal staff online communication and command and control. The
public stuff (i.e. web sites), except for the size of these e-mail
lists, is pretty much the same as 2000. (I am not getting reports of
major innovations abroad from places like Sweden or Germany either. In
the Netherlands a new "voting indicator" was extremely popular
<http://www.stemwijzer.nl/english/index.html> with something like 2
million users. Felix Nolte did send me a note about a new local
direct democracy party <http://www.demoex.net> in Sweden that did win
some seats. They do explain in English <http://www.demoex.net/eng/>
how they will use the web to engage their citizens.)

My sense is that the US Senate and Governor sites are the most feature
rich, US House sites pretty static, the number of state legislative
candidate web sites may even be contracting (but now have e-lists),
and that local candidate sites is the one area of tremendous numbers
growth because so few were online in the past. This is just my finger
in the wind sense.

Minnesota Public Radio, does have one of those popular select a
candidate features, the difference here is that it covers four "major"
party candidates:
http://news.mpr.org/collections/campaign2002/selectacandidate/selectagov.shtml
On the .Org side, CDT had a good review
<http://www.cdt.org/publications/pp_8.19.shtml> of various sites
including Michigan's Publius voter registration confirm/ballot
look-up+ <http://sos.publius.org> - also see the press release
(something I missed forwarding earlier)
<http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127--50108--,00.html>, and
the League of Women Voter's DNet <http://www.dnet.org> among others.
I have asked both projects to send along any specific tips from which
we can learn.

On the academic side, I mentioned <http://www.politicalweb.info>
before. The Institute for Democracy Politics and the Internet
(formerly the Democracy Online Project) at George Washington
University is out with their Online Campaigning 2002 Primer
<http://www.ipdi.org/>. Annenberg's Netelection.Org site is back
<http://www.netelection.org> with some recent conference materials.

Thanks all for now ...

25,000 Email Addresses and Counting!

This week, an incredible milestone was passed; the 25,000th email
address was added to the Wellstone for Senate database. Thank you for
being part of Minnesota campaign history! Now is not the time to rest on
our laurels. We are now more focused than ever on expanding the reach of
our grassroots organization. One of the best ways to help us build
towards victory is to forward the Wellstone Wire (by using the Forward
to a Friend feature at the top of this email) to at least 5 friends or
co-workers and encourage them to become part of the effort, or enter
their names into the box below.

Keep Your Eyes on Your Signs!
Throughout the state, over 20,000 Wellstone lawn signs have been
planted. Our thanks to the hundreds and hundreds of dedicated volunteers
who made this possible. Unfortunately, due to the efforts of those that
wish to stifle our message, thousands have already been stolen,
vandalized, and even set on fire! To our supporters, we apologize; rest
assured, we at the Wellstone for Senate campaign will not engage in such
behavior.

New American, New Voter Initiative
Using the slogan "Your voice is your vote," organizers in the Hmong,
African, Latino, and Tibetan communities are helping new immigrants
register to vote, learn about the U.S. political system, the candidates,
how to participate in the electoral process, and ultimately the
importance of each vote. Excellent outreach is being done in Spanish,
Hmong, Tibetan and several African languages.

Volunteer / Intern Spotlight:
The Hornsteins- Volunteers, Headquarters
The Wellstone Campaign has been blessed with many brother-sister and
grandmother-granddaughter volunteer duos. But one day this summer we had
three generations of Hornsteins. Stephen Hornstein, a retired doctor,
was joined by his son Frank, DFL-Endorsed State House Candidate for
District 60B, and Frank's daughter Rebecca (of Barton Elementary School)
in stuffing envelopes at the campaign headquarters. If you would like to
volunteer and bring along a family member, please contact Chris Conry at
