Good Point.  There are definitely two separate discs; both SanDisk SSDs, one is designated 64 Gb and the other 1000 Gb, as per the SMART reports.  It's my woolly mindedness that led me to call the 64 G disc sda1.  That would explain at least one of the fsck errors.

I just ran the Extended SMART Tests on the 64 G disc and it passed without errors.  I am currently running the same tests on the 1000 G disc, but that's going to take three hours, so I'm using my laptop until then.  If that passes, I'll try one of the other suggested remedies.
