Have you tried the new Thunderbird 3 beta? There was a thread on this list recently about it. It has a lot of IMAP improvements. Sylpheed has a new beta out as well with improved IMAP support. (Sylpheed runs on Windows and Linux, I wish it ran on Macs). j
