It's not that bad and complicated. Since some pre-release I did  
update the unicode-2 branch while it was patched to build Emacs.app.  
It went quite fine to update the pre-releases as they came out,  
seldom, by just applying the patches to the source code of that time.  
A few hunks were created then and the problems causing them could be  
solved easily.

I don't remember exactly whether I upgraded that way to RC1, too.  
With RC2a I fetched the patched sources and did not update the  
unicode-2 core because of some problems with the fringes.
