I haven't followed Gnome or KDE dev for quite a while so I can't
really comment on what they might have nowadays..
But by 'gadget' I mean most any ui component that displays on
(virtual) desktops - they can be front ends for E modules or even
small standalone apps. They don't have to be gadcon constrained,
and can even be containers of their own.
It's really quite open ended, but with many of the current ones
plus one or two new ones (like for example an "iMenu" type of
module) one can do quite a bit.

In case it's not too clear what one can do with this, let me once again
copy/paste the well-known example of this 'shell-theming' concept
from the Windows world - what's known as DesktopX skins:

http://www.wincustomize.com/explore/desktopx_themes/sort/popular/sortby/halloffame

There are literally thousands of these things that people have designed,
as well as 'premium' ones that Stardock sells.

There are several other such skinning systems in the Windows world,
there's even one very popular one which is GPL, it's called Rainmeter:
http://rainmeter.net/
and you can see some near thousand skins for it here:
http://www.customize.org/rainmeter/skins

The screenshots don't actually do justice to these skins since they are
ususally highly animated. Here are some example videos showing you what
they can be like:

All this can be done with E, most would require just a couple
of new modules.

Indeed :)
